I think I am going to raise some Ringnecks, some Melinistic Mutant, and some Hungarian Chuckars this spring. I have raised all kinds of poultry all my life but never game birds. I have nearly 100% success rate with poults, chicks, ducklings and goselings so I should do ok but still need some pointers. Anyone on here raise these birds and if so where do you get them?? I am thinking about getting mine from Murray McMurray out of Iowa. for 60 ringnecks, 30 Melenistic Mutant, and 60 Chuckars they want $175.00. is that the going rate or can I get them cheaper elsewhere??

Sycamoreredneck,
I am going to give you a number to a gentleman that raises Huns, and Pheasants and he raises right at 10 to 15,000 Pheasants and usually around 6000 huns a year. He has been doing this for at least 10 years that I know of and he lives in the Piqua, Sidney area. His name is Steve Fogt and his number is 937-538-6082 Tell him that Greg Agee told you about him and he can help to guide you in the right direction. Good Luck and keep us updated.

Syca,
Did you try MtHealthy Hatchery near Cincinnati? I have purchased day old chicks from them in the past and they have really good birds.
Having raised other poultry you know you need to give them room. Pheasants like to peck at each other and will canibalize other birds once the bleeding starts (like other poultry). For this reason many breeders will "de-beak" or "burn the tips off of pheasants.
What kind birds you raising now? I'm looking to get into some "game fowl" and looking for someone to point me in the right direction.

Good luck on the birds and let me know how your doing on the huns if you go that route! nex time I get a pup I'm going to be looking for a good hun breeder, I've heard they're much better for training grouse dogs than quail. I know a guy that has a pheasant preserve and he puts blinders on all his cockbirds to stop them from beating each other up. They're a pain to do but they work and he puts on about 2-3000 blinders a year! :yikes:
