well if you are old enough, what do you remember from those early years when there was only recurves and longbows...one thing other than bows that always sticks out, even though i never used one or i dont recall using one...was c merril sites...seems if a guy was going to use a bowsight for hunting,it was a c merril...usually just a simple little device that was attached by tape or 2 lil short screws...the real hard core serious hunters used the screws,a bow was meant for hunting, dont worry bout a couple holes!!!:just something that comes to the mind when i think of the past...C MERRIL WORLD FAMOUS SITES...

yo coonskinner - i still have one of those four pin merrill bow sights - mfg in minn - well i remember when i tried some fiberglass arrows - had a couple blow up (shatter to pcs) on a cold day when i hit a tree - also got a big block of foam from somewhere to use as a target - it stopped the arrows but you couldn't get them back out - ha -

take care

Wow, comming from a 27 year old, its hard to imagine the "good ol' days of bowhunting". Just go to Cabela's or Gander Mtn. or Bass Pro and your head swims with all the bow hunting gadgets and gizmos. But no offense, I would probably not want to revert to the good ol' days. I am way to bad of a shooter to kill anything with a stick and string, I know cause I tried once.....:coco:

syc...thanks,xactly why i started this...so you young guys get some of the past archery history...yup its changed a lot,i remember when cabelas sold c.merril sights and only recurve bows mainly with a longbow thrown in...much different today at cabelas...but at least they too have got back to their roots, what made them what they are today...so now their customers have gained another choice for shooting and hunting...it wasnt long ago there was no recurves/longbows in cabelas...look now!!!

coonie , remember the early 70s when the compound bow started getting really popular , if we would have had a little forsight we would have bought all those wooden bows the guys were trying to get rid of , i remember i bought my first kodiac for 10 dollers and a 12 pack of pabst blue ribbon. off a guy that just had to have a bear whitetail. hoot

As a Cabela's employee, I'm glad to see that the interest in trad archery is alive and well at the WV store:) We're usually out of stock on the new Savannah longbows as they're selling as fast as we get em:cool: Martin recurves and Freddy Bear's are selling too! I've personally helped a half doz co-workers make the transition to recurves, one a woman that's shooting a 50# longbow:yikes: Looks like '06 will be a good year as we're trying to add more products and accessories for the trad archer :) ....TF

I was cleaning out the shop this weekend and found an old tin onion box that I used to keep archery stuff in back in the 70's. I opened it up and found some old field points and dry-rotted brush buttons. But what was the real treasure was a box of Tex Isbell's Skunk Screen! Remember that stuff? It had two bottles of juice that didn't smell like anything, but mix a drop of each and look out!!!

I loved that stuff when I was a kid. My truck, my boots, my back porch, and occasionally my classroom all smelled like a polecat from Oct. to Jan.

Well of course, I had to see if it was any good. Two drops on a rag on my workbench and the show was on. It only took my wife about 5 minutes to get wind of it upstairs. My kids are still laughing and the ol' woman's still trying to get ahold of her lawyer! My oldest daughter wanted to take it to school!:yikes:Apple don't fall too far from the tree...

Hard to believe after 30 years, that stuffs good as new. Who needs scentloc???;)

jeff , what a great story , and yes i remember that stuff.
i worked at a gunshop in the early 70's and it was gun season , well alot of times rastlin those deer around, weighing and checking , them in was a chore so at times we would stink a little , my wife came in about dark and boy was we swamped , and stinkie. she was talking to larry , a customer, friend, lawyer . she said something about how i smelt , i told him about my pet skunk , when my wife asked me where i was going to keep it . i said , under the bed , she said , what about the smell , i replied , let him get used to it, i had to . he just dug into his wallet and gave her a buisness card , and said you are gonna need this someday , i also do divorces. hoot

actually i prolly kilt more deer out of a baker, including a very nice buck in minus 16 degree weather...was my success due to the baker...nope,it was mainly due to the fact i could walk right out my back door into the wayne and hunt every day of season...

Jeff....I remember the Skunk Screen weell and used my share of it. Also can never forget an early PA bowhunt in the late 60's when my father-in-law made me stop his old Ford truck along RT #30 just outta Greensburg, Pa and he picked up a fresh roadkill skunk along the berm. Thru the critter on the running board of that old Ford:yikes: and we drove another 20 miles into the Pa mountains to our camp!! Every morning we'd git up and kick that old skunk around a bit before we went to our stands! Best damn cover scent you can get, he'd say:eek: Talk about old school;) Those were the days!!.....TF

I NEVER REALLY USED THAT SKUNK STUFF...but i think i bought the mix stuff once when it was very popular but never ever opened it up...i did use fox urine a buddy trapper gave me bout that time but not for long...getting back to the skunk stuff though,it seemed about every time i was on stand even way out in the woods ,the woods would be full of skunk smell,it definately was used a lot...so i didnt have any reason to open up mine...and you know,i think i seen LESS deer with that smell around...maybe the deer dont like it too...:mischeif:

i also used fox pee for cover up . i kinda thought that if something stired a skunk up to smell that bad , mabey it just might allert the deer . :coco:

coonskinner
02-15-2006, 05:14 AM
well it didnt really matter if you personally used the stuff, seems the woods was always full of skunk smell so i just didnt need to buy my own or use it...also i do not ever recall running into a skunk in the woods...but i did many times in fields and farmers yards...i figured when i smelled skunk in the woods it was a hunter...wonder if a deer figured that too...:mischeif:

Coonie, me and my buddy shot a bunch of deer usin' that stuff. It might not of helped us, but I don't think it bothered them a bit. I actually kinda liked the smell....

In the early to mid 60's I wasn't hunting with a bow but was shooting targets with a Ben Pherson 45# Stallion. I think that was what it was called. Then the arrow to have was a figerglass. Bought a dozen from of all places J. C. Penneys. I think they were only some thing like $25. Ah yes the gool ole days!
