Can anyone tell me how to determine what length bowstring is needed for a recurve bow when the old string is not available? The bow is a Shakespeare model X26 NECEDAH, 58", 55#S, THANKS.

The bow is AMO rated at 58". Buy an AMO rated 58" string.
Link (http://cabelas.com/cabelas/en/templates/product/standard-item.jsp?_DARGS=/cabelas/en/common/catalog/item-link.jsp_A&_DAV=MainCatcat21424&id=0004443413016a&navCount=2&podId=0004443&parentId=cat20019&navAction=push&catalogCode=IF&rid=&parentType=index&indexId=cat20019&hasJS=true)
They list it as 58" which would fit an AMO rated 58" bow.

What they say on their site-
Item notes
The actual physical measurement of the strings will be four inches shorter than the measurement ordered. For example the 58 inch string will actually measure 54 inches. This is done to meet AMO specifications.

i believe bout 4 " bigger-3-4" anyway...i make my own so i always make them a little long and twist them up...if you live near newark there is a trad. shop there that will make you a flemish twist string...neceda,one of my favorites,i have 4...a couple 58"(AROUND 1968 IF ITS THE BROWN)...green was 70s...also a 55"1964-67...and i also have the 54" super neceda...my first bow in 1964 was a shakespeare neceda...

Thanks for info SP Scout.

Coonskinner, I have the brownbow! Sounds like its older than I thought. Just bought it to get familiar with traditional equipment. I am hoping to make my own bow in the future. Have a friend whose cutting some Osage Orange trees down, planning on pickup up a couple of logs this winter and splitting them into staves. I have this grand idea of making a bow, arrows, string, broadhead - all from scratch. Cutting dogwood for the arrow shafts, using turkey feather from a bird I killed...

I thought the general rule was four inches less.

If your bow is 58 inches then you'd buy a 54 inch string.

If your looking to get a string, I would try the link below.
I had one made for a hickory flatbow, turned out real nice, and
his prices or really cheap compared to others if you add shipping.
