View Full Version : Operation "Smack Down"

Began today (I changed the name. Blood thirst sounded to hokey.)

One deer came in tonight, but she must have known I wasn't going to be merciful tonight. She held up two steps from my field of fire and turned around and ran off. A short time later two foxes came in and chowed down.

I envy how many deer you see TF. The last 5 days on stand I havent seen a deer, I think every deer in my area was slain during gun season.

Thunderflight...seems like you see quite a few fox in NC. Are there any coyotes down that way? I don't think coyotes tolerate
fox in there area.....Are coyotes legal to shoot or trap in NC?

Thunderflight

There are yotes, but they are sparse. I'm going to try to hunt them this winter though. We can't use rifles on base so I'll use my in-line ML.

Thunderflight

Oh, Fox season is open in my county until 1 January. I didn't shoot at them because it was prime deer movement time and I didn't want to screw up a potential opurtunity.

well, how did it go?

I went out tonight and only saw one, but out of bow range.

Thunderflight

Normally I'd only count one towards the enemy unless I launched an arrow down range in anger, but tonight it was obvious that the little basturds have me pegged.......

At 1545 I was heading in the woods and four deer were bedded right where I enter the power line!!!! They took off into another section of woods so I figured an hour or so later they would probably meander back around to my set up. I was correct and around 1700 I could hear them on the other side of the power line. My wind was good, but they wouldn't come out.

At 1720 I had a deer come up behind me and hang back. The wind was blowing right to the deer and even though I was wearing two scent lock suits I'm sure the deer picked up some of my odor. I also had the fat fox come by, but the deer was behind me and I didn't want to blow a potential opurtinity.

Anyway at 1740 the deer took off and ran across the power line.

I've gotten away two times by not playing the wind in this spot. Scent lock works great and I have ALOT of confidence in it, but once they get close I honestly believe they can pick up on you. They probably think your alot further way, but they still get you.

Anyway, the wind is forcasted to shift by Friday so we'll see what's up. From here on out though I doubt I'll hunt that spot with a NE wind. I need a Southern wind.

Not much going on tonight. I did hear deer moving across the powerline with about 5 minutes of legal shooting time left.

I took a shot at the fat fox tonight and missed.

Here's a picture from my stand set. The ladder stand will probably be coming down tomorrow and replacing my hang on. I'm going to move it a bit further back into the woods. I got some intell that there are two really good bucks in this woods so I'm going to go back a bit further and see what happens.

Nope, I'm about 2.5 hours from Bragg. They take some really nice bucks off Bragg and I might try hunting it next year.

I'm stationed at Marine Corps Air Station New River. I'm next door to Camp Lejeune.

ARRRGGGGHHHH......:D :D :D

Dang deer and deer feeder.....

My feeder has a light sensor and goes off when the light level reaches a certain point. Well unfortunatly that certain point in the evening is 20 minutes after sunset. I even tried putting a piece of paper infront of the the sensor so it would get darker quicker and go off earlier. Well that didn't work and to top it off the deer are now programed and only come out about 10 minutes before it goes off.

No kidding it was like a dang dinner bell..... :D I had four deer come in and skirt around the outside of me. With two minutes of legal shooting time remaining I was getting ready to draw down on the lead doe when one of the other four saw me...

They all bolted, but only ran mabye 10 yards. That was enough to seal the deal and ensure that TF wasn't going to get shot tonight. Anyway, I waited until 6 pm and started to get down. These deer have no fear once the lights are out. I thought they were gone, but they were still there and only walk off another ten yards or so and came back as I left. The trail cam is out tonight and I got video of one and hopefully many pictures tonight.
