Your not going to believe this, but it happened again. I was hunting on base and checked in early so I could put some corn out and be ready to hunt by 4 pm. There were a seven other hunters in the area today which is kinda odd because usually it's just three or four of us.

Anyway I get to the parking area and there is three trucks parked there. I started getting that feeling that I should have sayed home and took the family to Mikes Farm for the Christmas Light show.

Anyway, I get to my stand and as I'm getting ready to dump some corn I hear a whistle. I look up and there is a guy in a climber ten feet from my tree stand.....

I told him that I had a stand already set up. He turned around and saw it and apologized. He said he didn't see it. Then I asked him if he saw the corn cobs and mini food plot? He replied yes, but figured that no one was hunting it because they were all bare. He said he'd get down and hunt some place else. I was appreciative, but then he started telling me about a 160 pound buck he killed in November that had a 22 inch spread. I thought this was odd because I'm friends with the game warden and he would have told me. Then he told me a story about how his Dad checked in the deer and the game warden didn't have a camera.

At the end of the evening I asked the GW about it and he said he didn't know anything about a big buck being killed in that area. He got pretty upset too because you have to check in all deer killed on the air station at the GW shack.

The GW called the guy and it turns out he was pissed that I ran him out of my stand site so he told me a fish story about a monster buck he killed just to get me back. Well it worked...... ;) :D He reeled me in hook line and sinker too....:D :D

Anyway, two hunters using two of my hunting spots in two days.. I hate to see what happens next week.

He is trying to get tips on Trad Hunting. I saw him advertising something the other day holding a recurve. Im guessing it was the only bow they had for him to hold at the time.

That's the main reason I was a upset. I've spet alot of time and money grooming these stand sites. They could at least leave a couple bucks under my stand....;)

Well I hunted this morning and ran into the kids dad (no he wasn't in my stand either). We BS'd for an hour and he seems like a good guy. I told him that I plan on using that same story his boy told me as a joke. ;)

I took out my frustration on a big ole opossum.

I don't understand how shooting a big opposum can help vent frustration, but it does. I did the same thing over Thanksgiving break. How far away was he?

Thunderflight

Less than ten yards.

I'm quite sure he's dead now. I was aiming for his head and hit him just below his neck.

TF forgive me for asking this but as you may know I am new to hunting etc.

If the land is public or in your case open to base personnell and he was in his own stand isn't it a case of he just beat you to it that day? I understand you have been doing the baiting etc, but if I did that at Delaware Wildlife Area and something similar happened I would find another spot (except no way could I leave a stand there).

I am not trying to be a butthead but am asking this because I am unsure if there are unspoken rules saying if you find someones bait area don't hunt it etc.

thanks
David

Your absolutly correct. If he wanted to he could have told me to pack sand and hunt some place else.

It's crazy how tough those things are. I shot mine from 30 yards. Put it through both lungs, he curled up, and then got up and walked a whole fifteen yards before he went down.

OK so this is a case where he should "do the right thing" and not hunt your baited area. I think he did right by leaving it to you. May not have been compelled by law or regulation but he realized that you had put time into the area. Thanks for the reply and not biting my head off!

PS I would have told the buck story too LOL
PPS but then again since you are on this board you would have known there was no way in hell I had even seen a deer let alone shot it!

Well it's official.

I'm "labled" as a butt head on base.......;)

Remember Sundays little encounter. Well the GW told me today that while he was talking to the kids Dad, "Ted" (a guy I had an encounter with last year, but under MUCH different circumstances) came up and told the father than I pulled the same crap on him last year.

The GW and I had a good laugh about it, but it kinda pisses me off too.

Both are retired so rank doesn't mean squat. Ted was a retired Gunnery Sergeant (E-7).

I spoke with the kids Dad last Sunday and I think we're cool. He heard my side of the story and I think he understood a little better. According to the GW his boy told him I had run him out of the spot, but what really happened was he offered to leave.

Ted is a dork. Here's the story about him.

Last year was the first year I hunted MCAS New River and the GW suggested that I hunt area 3A because it held alot of deer. I had never been there before so I had no ideal of the lay of the land. The GW just told me to walk down the logging road and if I was any kind of hunter I would easily figure it out from there.

I signed out and one other hunter, "Ted", had previously signed out the same area. These areas hold up to ten hunters so I wasn't worried about crowding anyone.

I get to the spot and start walking down the logging road. I wasn't too impressed with what I saw and about 100 yards down the road and I look up and there's "Ted". I waive and quitely press on and end up setting up about 150 yards from him. I had to cross a swamp to another island. This place is just ate up with deer sign. I climb up my tree and an hour later kill a doe.

That evening I come back to the GW shack and there's my buddy.

"Ted" saunters up to me and in a very sarcastic tone tells me he needs to school me on "hunters ediqute". Right off the bat I go into defensive mode, but since I'm the new guy in town I let him finish blowing meaningless giberish out of his suck. When he was done I reminded him that he set up on the "only" way into the area and I apologized for messing up his hunt.

Then he found out I shot a deer. OMG!!! You could just see the envy spuing from his ears...... ;) Then he ask what kinda bow I shot. I told him it was a Mathews and he proceeded to go on about how he didn't like Mathews and prefered his Jennings over them. Ted continued on about how small my deer was and that was it and even commented that I had shot his deer (BTW the deer wasn't heading his way either).

I finally had enough and walked up to him and asked him what his "freak'n (censored word) problem was. I'm three times the size of Ted so he backed off and I never saw him until last Sunday. He complained to the GW about me the next day and Dave (the GW) told him to get over it and move on. I guess Ted thought I was some young Lance Corporal who he could push around and not an old CWO-3 who didn't have to put up with his crap.

Needless to say Ted and I don't get along. :D :D

Oh yes indeed. It sounds as though that Ted is quite the deer slayer! Serves you right man, for shooting all "his" deer. Great story TF. Keep on keepin on man and if that doe comes by this weekend you better whack her!

Good god, heard it for 3 years and it's still around, ha ha. Sounds like you need to shoot the first deer by your stand TF, hunting public land (used loosely here due to MB) sucks a big one with people like that around.
